We say goodbye to Candice and thank her for her dedication and loyalty to the practice for six years.
She is now working 4 mornings a week and is able to walk to her new practice in Sanderstead. Many patients have enquired for news.

Claire is specialised in health and safety;in this modern era of infection control a vital role in looking after the well being of all our patients. She will continue working Saturdays in addition.Linda, our hygienist has retired from dentistry and given up her dental registration. We would like to thank Linda for the many years of professionalism and high quality dentistry she has given to our practice. The practice had a Summer outing on the Wey navigation. We floated gently down river at 2mph , had a beautiful summer picnic and plenty of hard work and fun opening lock gates.
Neggin is carrying out treatments for implanting of new teeth directly into the jaw.
Neggin is well into her 2 year diploma course for fitting implant teeth into spaces where natural teeth have been lost. This is under the Faculty of General Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons London.
Edmund has been on an endodontic course and the dental nurses have had an update day on infection control and sterilisation due to the resistance of viruses in general. Our vacuum autoclave is now in operation.
New equipment.
We are updating our autoclaves to vacuum autoclave design with a new separate designated room with a planned ventilated air flow.
We are fitting amalgam filters to improve our effluent outflow.
Our computer work stations are also being renewed to improve memory, speed and quality of our digital imaging. Our back up system is also quicker, automatic and can be offsite as is distant electronic help line.We are now paperless except for archives from before 1989.
We say goodbye to Dr. Shiyana Eliyas who is continuing her consultant training at Sheffield Dental School.
Edmund attended recently two post-graduate education lectures. The first was on tissue preservation. This involved bone implantation to preserve facial dimensions after dental disease.
The second lecture was about orthodonticbraces with a less bulky brace system.
All the staff went to a whole day course at the royal college on emergencies at the dental practice.
There is some news about Sona who some of you will remember as a dentist at our practice. She is now in a practice in Cardiff which is a corporate,This means there are a chain of practices ,a little similar to Boots the chemist.
Edmund has recovered well from joint surgery and is now back to full time practice. He thanks Neggin for helping with the extra load while he was away.
There have been some changes to our team since the begining of the year.Sona after her sadness has returned to her family in Cardiff and the whole team wish her every happiness in the future. We welcome Neggin who has joined us as a dentist. She went to school at Croydon High and trained at Kings College Dental School. She also works at Kings teaching the students oral surgery for one day a week. For more details see ' Meet the Team page'.
We have increased the hours we work on a Saturday and recruited two new dental nurses for these popular times. We were also thinking of opening on a Sunday for a few hours if there was a demand. We would be interested in your feedback.
We say farewell to Rachel our Saturday nurse and wish her well in her higher studies.
We have now introduced optional reminders about dental appointments by mobile text. These will only be sent if desired. Please confirm your number with the practice manager Susan. These texts are specially popular with teenagers.
We have had much news recently.
Sona travelled to Tanzania over Christmas to help in an orphanage with work and advice. She also carried out emergency treatment up country 'pro bono'.
We welcome to the practice Kate Brock who will work as a dental nurse on Mondays and Wednesdays with and is fully qualified and registered with the dental council.
We congratulate Candice now being fully registered asa dental nurse with the G.D.C.
In December 2007 the practice had their Christmas dinner at the George in Old Oxted. Also present were previous members of the team Debbie Matlock and Eileen Hansford and new members Kate Brock and Sue our new practice manager.
We wish Julie well in her new endeavours and thank her for all her years of hard work.
The practice is gearing up to attain the British Dental Association's "Good Practice Scheme".
The practice is also incorporating which will give us more flexibility for new investment and change in the future.
We have been prevented from using one of our lockable clinical waste bins which sits at the back of the parking garage under the practice. The reason: a pair of blackbirds have decided to nest on top of it about 6 inches away from parking cars.
We welcome Carla Taylor to the practice. She has sat and passed the full Qualification exam for dental nurse. This qualification will become mandatory in 2008. She comes with excellent references and c.v.
Horses are the great love of her life.
We also welcome Susan Skinner as our practice manager. She will be the first face you will see at the desk. She has previous experience in a local practice and has the ability to put our patients at their ease. In summary she is a people person. You will recognise her as she still has a trace of Canadian accent.
We say farewell to Julie who has been with us for over 10 years. Her job description has expanded over the years out of all recognition, from answering the phone and making appointments to a full blown managing executive handling all the systems in a modern dental practice. We thank her and she will be missed. We wish her well in a new post with a small animal hospital in Caterham.
Deborah is also leaving and will be helping her husband run their electrical business. Our thanks to Deborah for all she has given to the practice. She will still be doing locums for us.
Shiyana has a one day a week honorary post at St.George's Hospital.
She has now been accepted for continuing specialist training at St.George's.We will be sorry to see her go as she has provided top quality dentistry to the people of Oxted. We wish her well, however she will continue part time at Oxted on a Saturday.
We welcome Dr.Sona Anand to the practice who will start mid July. She qualified in Birmingham in 1999.She has previously practised in general dentistry in Birmingham and Croydon. She has also practised in Cardiff in a practice limited to children. She will be full time on weekdays. She was born in Cardiff and is related to Edmund.
We had a practice dinner at the Gurkha Kitchen which ten of us attended including one retired member. This replaced the Christmas dinner.
We did not arrange a Christmas celebration for our team this year as Candice was away in Australia and Shiyana in her beloved birthplace of Sri Lanka also with her family. Instead we have arranged to party down the Thames leaving on a cruise from Waterloo to Greenwich and return. Candice has promised to give us all dancing lessons and Edmund will give a description of the river bank and hopes its not too cold.
Happy Christmas and new year to every one.
Kate Julie and Edmund went on a training day to the Holiday Inn business centre in Maidstone. It was given by our dental software supplier to enable us to remain on our game as regards our service to our patients.
One of the photos shows us having early morning breakfast with the TV relaying the disastrous cricket (for England) from Australia.
The other photograph shows Edmund discussing our new X ray dental imaging system being intergrated with the software by a member of the sales staff. The digital X ray system has now been fitted and the diagnostic detail is quite superb. The dose for each image has been slashed by at least 50%.
The only difference the patient might notice in the mouth is that the sensor is slightly thicker. It will also enable discussion of treatment plans with the patient more obvious and explainable
We have arranged further training days for all the team at the practice to enable the general software and X ray software to be both fully exploited.

Trip to Nairobi - Shiyana and Debbie have just returned from a visit to an orphanage in Nairobi with the charity 'Reach the Children' (registered charity number 1108058) to carry out some volunteering work this October.
They were involved in everything from painting to fixing roofs to dental check ups!!! Much of the time was spent at a school 'Little Rock' and a safe house 'Hands of Hope'.
Alot of time was spent carrying out dental education. The children seemed to enjoy brushing their teeth - so much so that hours later they still had their brushes in their mouth! Some of the project was paid for by the generous contributions made by many of our patients - Thankyou! Debbie also hosted a party to raise funds for the cause. Her sons were part of the band that performed with her husband as the lead singer!
This picture shows from left Debie,Candice,Shiyana and Sheena in cheerful mood before departure of Debie and Shiyana to a Kenyan orphanage to carry out dental education on very disadvantaged children. Watch this space for further news about this project.
Edmund went to the dental showcase exhibition at ExCel and purchased various items of capital dental equipment.
The photo on the left shows Edmund at the Kodak stand purchasing a top of the range digital Kodak x-ray system.
The advantages to the patient are a reduction in exposure by half, quicker diagnosis, better quality diagnosis and better storage, retrieval and reliability.
Edmund then went to Norwich for a 2 day residential course on minimal cavity preparation given by the British Society for General Dentistry of which Edmund is a member. The practice philosophy is to preserve maximum healthy tooth structure and only treat diseased structures.
Edmund went on a very intensive three day course with Bicon implants. After further experience he will be able to restore implants with crowns and eventually fit theimplants himself.

The practice hired a narrow boat to go from Godalming to Guildford and back on the Weybridge Navigation system. There were 10 of us aboard and it took all day to travel about 10 miles on a beautiful sunny late August day. The scenery was glorious.
We stopped for a picnic lunch and some cattle strolled over to investigate what we were doing. This was followed by some wasps. Linda our hygienist captained the boat as she was the only one who had ever been through lock gates in a boat before. We could only travel at 2 knots.
We even had time for a very short practice meeting and Candice and Debbie showed us all how to dance in an impromtu display on the towpath. The whole day was great fun enjoyed by all and will be repeated.

Shiyana and Debbie are spending their summer vacation helping to build classrooms and schools under expert guidance.
They may be also asked to help in providing dental education and treatment.
Any donations should be sent to the practice and will be forwarded in whole to Reach the Children HQ,registered charity number 1108058.
Watch this space for further news and photos as the work progresses. Debbie is hosting a party to raise funds for their childrens charity. Her family will be performing as the live band and have spent many hours in rehearsal.
We have been
in our new rooms since March 2004. We are very pleased
with the modern facilities created; we have converted
one floor of an office building. With this opportunity
for growth all our computers have been upgraded with
the most advanced dental software. This enables us
to record x-rays and photos on screen. All previous
letters and x-rays are scanned into the records.
In our future
development we will be digitising x-rays which reduces
radiation exposure and increases the ease of radiograph
interpretation. We already scan x-rays which improves ease of access, storage, speed of diagnosis, electronic transmission and manipulation. It is a similar process to scanning incoming and historical letters and photographs which we already do.
Candice and Kate making
tea in the refreshment area. |
We can now
offer printed estimates and treatment plans at the
time of examination with colour charting, diagrams and printed x-rays. We have just invested in a colour laser jet printer.
Charlotte is in the process of being interviewed by medical schools for medical training. She is also very pleased to have just passed her driving test and bought herself a car.
Here is some news of
previous nurses who have worked for us in the past.
- Sophie
has finished her degree at Nottingham University.
She now lives and works in Nottingham as a school
teacher; her brother is a missionary in Albania.
- Sally returned to do a locum
dental nurse post with us recently, she is training
to be a doctor at Southampton Medical School.
- Danni
also did a
locum with us,she is expecting a baby soon and
all the family will return to
New Zealand.
We wish all our former team
members well for the future in there
new professions.
Edmund recently attended a reunion of dentists who qualified at University College London. This was at the March rugby international between Wales and France in Cardiff. Edmund has been made President of the Old Students Association of University College London Dental School.
